There are
so many skin care products available it can be difficult to know what is right
for your skin. Just remember if you suffer from adult or teenage acne or
acne rosacea you should keep your routine as simple and non-irritating
as possible. You should also look for products that don't have alcohol, fragrance,
irritating scubs or preservatives.
The
good news is there are now excellent skincare and cosmetic formulations available
at your local drugstore. If you live outside the U.S. you can find the products
listed below at drugstores and web sites online.
Your
first step should be identifying your skin type. A simple way to determine
your skin type is to wash your face in the morning and not apply any products.
Check your face in the early afternoon - if your skin stays soft and you have
neither excessive oil nor dryness you probably have normal skin. If your
skin seems dehydrated, patchy and rough you have dry skin. An oily sheen,
especially in the T-Zone, probably means you have oily skin which tends
to suffer the worst breakouts. Combination skin is characterized by both
an oily T-Zone and dry patches on the cheeks and/or forehead.
Once
you determine your skin type it will be easier to pick the correct regime and
products. Dermaclear is effective and suitable for all skin types. It can be used
alone as both a cleanser and treatment product for all skin types with
mild to moderate breakouts. However, dry skins may need a moisturizer while oilier
skin types might benefit from separate cleanser.
If
you have oily or combination skin or suffer heavy breakouts you can use a separate
cleanser before applying Dermaclear. We always recommend Johnson & Johnson's
Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser. It contains 10% benzoyl
peroxide in a creamy formulation. For dry or normal skin types who like to use
a cleanser or need to remove makeup, Cetaphil's Gentle Skin Cleanser is a great
choice.
Everyone
needs a good sunscreen. Normal or dryer skin types should try, Cetaphil Daily
Facial Moisturizer, SPF 15 or Coppertone Oil Free Sensitive Skin Sunblock
Lotion, SPF, 30. For oily or combination skin types, try Neutrogena Healthy
Skin Face Lotion, SPF 15 or Coppertone's Oil Free Faces Sunblock, SPF 30.
For powder, foundation
and concealer, you can never go wrong with Neutrogena cosmetics. All of their
cosmetics are non-comedogenic and dermatologist recommended. Many are formulated
to prevent acne breakouts. For dry or normal skin, try their Visibly Even or
Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup and Healthy Skin Smoothing Stick Concealer.
For oily or combination skin, try Neutrogena's Skin Clearing Oil-Free Makeup
in liquid or compact or their Skin Clearing Oil-Free Pressed Powder. They
also have a Trio Compact with powder, treatment and concealer.
There
are many other terrific products to help keep skin clear. Just be sure to read
the product ingredients carefully and know your skin type. Rule out products with
unnecessary alcohol, fragrance, preservatives and dyes. Always look for the terms
"non-comedogenic" or "non acneogenic" on the label. Keep in
mind you may have to use a product for a few weeks to see true results.
